Anambra CP blames politicians, families over rising crime rate

Karma (Anambra CP)
The Anambra Police Commissioner, Mr. Hosea Karma, has said the conduct of some politicians and families was contributing to the rising wave of crime in society.
Karma stated this on Thursday during a one-day security awareness dialogue organised by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in collaboration with the office of the Secretary to the Anambra State Government in Awka.
He explained that most families were no longer interested in the moral upbringing of their children because of quest for material things.
He said, “There is a family today in this state who had refused to bury their 86-year-old mother because of family feud.
“They are nine children from the same mother. They want to tear their dead mother apart because they are struggling for the place to bury the old woman. Tell me; if families are into such violence, what do you think they would contribute to society?
“Politicians should endeavour to play the game of politics by the rules, demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship, elevate politics beyond ethnicity and self-aggrandisement and ensure the fulfillment of promises made during electioneering.”
Karma maintained, “This will reduce acrimony and violence associated with politics, which often times create tensions for the police to contend with in the society.”
Speaking on the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the state, Karma said his command was able to contain the activities of herdsmen in the state through an informal security method.
He said the method that had worked for his command was the use of Fulani herdsmen that were born in the state to checkmate the activities of others that were somewhat foreign to the state.
“We have told those Fulani herdsmen born in the state that any untoward incident that occurred in the state as a result of herdsmen activity, we shall hold them responsible.
“With this, they have helped us to police their fellow herdsmen because they understand both Igbo language and Fulani language. This system has helped us a lot,” Karma said.
The police commissioner enjoined the traditional rulers and Presidents-General of groups in the state to always report the activities of herdsmen in their areas to the police and avoid resorting to self-help as a solution.
He said, “Our investigations have shown that if you resort to self-help in fighting these people (Fulani herdsmen), the situation would be catastrophic. They don’t forgive anything done them, even in three years’ time.”
In his opening remarks, the State Commander of NDLEA, Mr. Sule Momodu, said the objective of the workshop was to make everybody in the state security conscious in the prevailing circumstance of the time.
Momodu explained that the synergy of security agencies in Anambra had made it one of the most secure states in the country.
He commended the state government for what he called its demonstrable commitment in fighting crimes in the state.
No fewer than eight lectures were delivered at the workshop, among which was the one on ‘Fraud Prevention Techniques’ delivered by Mr. Edwin Ugwudo, a banker.
